Recent Project - Barra Learning Centre
Location: Isle of Barra, Western Isles, Scotland
Build type: New Build
Carbon savings: ~ 41 tonnes (estimated over a 25yr lifespan)
Background: Recognising the need for a new learning facility on the island, Voluntary Action Barra obtained sufficient funding to build a brand new 250m² purpose built learning centre. Post school educational opportunities in Barra have increased significantly since the opening of the new learning centre which is part of Lews Castle College.
The facilities offer a well-equipped and supportive environment for adults continuing or returning to study. Courses in subjects from IT to photography can be delivered locally or remotely or completed via open learning. Over £15,000 worth of funding was secured from the Scottish Communities and Householders Renewables Initiative (SCHRI) for the installation of an air source heat pump to provide heating and hot water for the centre.
This was the first Air Source Heat Pump to be installed anywhere in the Western Isles. In comparison to the alternative all-electric heating system the centre would have used, the Air Source Heat Pump has meant both lower running costs and reduced carbon emissions.
Recent Project - Chestnut Court Care Home

Carbon savings: ~ 160 tonnes (estimated over a 25yr lifespan)
Background:Chestnut Court is a new purpose-built care home registered for 61 elderly residents and offers nursing, residential and dementia care. Chestnut Court has been beautifully decorated and furnished to the very highest standard.
Each floor has been individually designed to create a high quality luxury home from home. Each bedroom has en suite facilities and all heating and hot water requirements are met by five air source heat pumps.
